WACS/Cheadle Hulme U14 buzzing after first game
By Roberto Simi
After a sleepy post summer start W/CH gained in confidence and turned it round with a gutsy determined finish
A nervy first quarter with W/CH not quite finding their feet - pressed back by the 2 bigger Heaton Mersey players they succumbed to 3 goals. But the efforts over the summer on the training ground soon started to tell.
Not letting their heads drop they gradually gained momentum during the second period. Building from the back with new keeper Rhys in goal (a consistent goalkeeper has been a real issue for the last few seasons) - he showed how good he has been for the CH U12s with some magnificent stops. Some excellent defending from the long sticks of Jack, Ethan and Liam who took out a HM player with one of the best shoulder checks we've seen. Midfield started to gain some control with new players Rhys and Will gelling in well. Ben harried a Heaton Mersey player who was in possession on the left forcing him to step out. From the restart Ben ran in with some great movement and played a pinpoint pass to Sean. He cleverly feigned a run around the back and instead turned inside and side stepped the goalkeeper to score.
That gave them the boost they needed and W/CH started to dominate from that point. A long W/CH clearance up field fell agonisingly short of the attack area with Sean trying to reach it, but no fear Ross stormed up field to cleanly pickup and and made a sharp pass through to Sean who ran in to make it 2. Ben then showed the benefit of his blistering pace scoring 2 fabulous goals to get W/CH in the lead. A great dodging attack from Luca running in from the right brought him 1-1 on with the goalkeeper and with coach Ben's words ringing in his ears he swapped hands to his left which gave him the space to smartly place the ball in.
Ethan, despite being long pole defender, had been determined to push forward many times during the game and broke through a swathe of players running the whole length of the pitch to score. The game was finished up with Sean who despite taking a crunching blow that floored him in front of goal still had the conviction to score. Fantastic start well done all.
