Even with a few key players missing today and Mellor also bringing in some younger players to fill their gaps, the opposition still showed their dominance.
Mellor started as they meant to go on with a quick break and their 19 snook one in at the left post. Isaac did well from the faceoff and Thomas took an early shot but Mellor broke away and scored a second early goal. The best spell for WACS of the first quarter followed, a great check from Aryun let loose the ball and WACS won possession after a foul. Thomas took full advantage and scored WACS first. Mellor scored from a super long range shot to bring the score 1-3. A good break from Ethan who fought his way through but their defence held strong and the turnover led to another goal. Mellor finished the quarter with a good well worked team goal taken by their No. 10.
The second quarter saw some good movement but a number of missed ground balls and a (crowd disputed!) technical foul gave Mellor their chances and they were soon at 1-7. WACS took a timeout which proved effective, Thomas was strong at the faceoff and Ethan went on a great run and some neat passing behind goal led to WACS second goal. Ben fought off a number of challenges well in midfield from the face off and WACS had a good spell of possession. When Mellor won the ball back though it was straight from the training ground with the ball pinging around the WACS defence and cutting in to score. Despite some good spells of defensive work Mellor finished the quarter 2-9.
The third quarter saw Mellor extend their lead to 2-14. The fourth quarter was probably WACS best showing despite not managing to extend their goal tally. Defensive play improved and reduced Mellor mostly to long range shots. A great check from Liam in defence passed to sibling Jack who stormed the full length of the pitch and passed to Thomas who just missed. Mellor ran out 2-16 winners in the end and whilst disheartened after last week's jubilation their enthusiasm doesn't seem to wane.
