From previous seasons Rochdale were always a strong physical team and they started in that vein with a quick goal in the first few minutes from their number 4. The game quickly evened out with lots of midfield action followed by both teams succumbing to offside decisions - WACS benefited from theirs with James running in to score. Tom in goal for the first half kept WACS in it with 2 great saves which led to a fabulous WACS goal to take the lead. Passes all around the crease from Sean, Ben, Luca, Issac and then a great take from Thomas finished the quarter.
WACS extended their lead at the start of the second with some great work from Sean on the right and a long pass to Issac who setup an attacking move from Thomas and then James running to score on the right. Thomas quickly followed up with another
Ben picked up a loose ball and started a great run passing to Jack who fought off a strong challenge passing to James who ran across goal swapping hands to score making it 5-1 WACS.
A bit of confusion from the face off gave Rochdale a clear run at goal to score quickly and then with WACS a man down Tom blocked a low shot but Rochdale scored another on the rebound. Things started to look nervous when Rochdale broke away after a WACS face off violation and cut in from the right to bring the score 5-4.
James and Thomas battled hard and responded with 2 quick WACS goals between them. A long period of ferocious midfield tackles followed and some good chances - Aryun came very close on the right and James belted one against the crossbar. Thomas closed the quarter with another WACS goal at 8-4.
Rochdale started the third well but WACS defensive tactics particularly from Liam and Joe were a good match- Jack swapped for Tom in goal and produced a good save early on. A fantastic run and dodge from Ethan along the byline with a pass to Sean lead to a close shot. Harry also came close with a good passes from Oscar and Tom. Hannah picked up the ball behind goal and ran in passing to James with a fabulous behind the back shot and goal. Thomas scored soon after the face-off to make what seemed a comfortable 10-4 lead. Rochdale then came back into the game and started to build the pressure scoring 2 goals at the end of the third.
They continued their comeback in the final quarter with another to make it 10-7. Ross’s resilience on the left and excellent midfield running from Ethan led to 2 more goals from James which relieved things. Rochdale got their final goal of the game and WACS held out all their latter pressure. James took a blow but showed his determination continuing through to Thomas who still had work to do but scored from a tight angle. A well deserved WACS win with a real all round team performance.
