On a dreich south Manchester morning WACS improved on last week’s performance, with many positives, before ultimately succumbing to a more experienced opposition.

They started the match confidently, standing up to early pressure before James won possession to create the first chance of the game, with Ross firing just wide. Further pressure followed from Sean, and the Reds competed well in the middle of the park with some possession-winning checks from Ben and good combinations involving the entire midfield and forward lines. They were unlucky to go 0-1 down, and not long later a good breakaway goal followed. Two excellent saves from Tom in goal left the score at 0-2 going into the 2nd quarter.

After conceding a couple of early goals despite dogged disruption from Jack, Liam and Harry, WACS came close with James smacking the cross bar after great play from Isaac on the wing. The goal they deserved arrived soon after with James jinking inside his man and finishing a sweeping move involving Liam, Matt, Luca and Auryn down the entire length of the left wing. A goal rush left the score 1-8 at half-time.

The 3rd quarter opened brightly with Sean, Luca and James combining well, before Thomas scored a peach of a goal after prolonged and patient possession looking for the opportunity. Tom won possession soon after, feeding Isaac then Thomas for James to finish. 3-8, game on! The quarter finished 3-9, with solid several saves from Matt who had taken over in goal at half time.

The final quarter was…difficult.
Despite the final score of 3-16, against very good opposition, there is a definite sense of improvement with the teamwork and tactical nous both stepped up from last week. It is also great to see so many players at this age group – 15 for this match. A bit more match experience will go a long way!
